Palm Pre Touchstone Charging Dock

Avoid the hassle of tangled cords and charge your Palm Pre wirelessly with this Palm Touchstone Charging Dock. The first inductive charging solution for phones, the Touchstone Charging Dock allows you to set your Palm Pre on top of the dock without worrying about connection, orientation or fit. The device remains active while charging, allowing access to the touch screen, movies or video, or the speakerphone option.

The Touchstone Charging Dock.

Palm Pre and Touchstone Back Cover sold separately.
This package includes just the Touchstone Charging Dock; to charge your device wirelessly, you also need the separately available Touchstone Back Cover for Palm Pre.

Just set your Pre with compatible Touchstone Back Cover on the Touchstone Charging Dock, and it magnetically snaps into place and begins charging. The magnets align your phone in the correct position for charging, whether in portrait or landscape mode--no cables or connectors required to attach your phone to the dock. And it charges in the same amount of time as wall charger that came with your Palm Pre.

The Charging Dock also offers a number of handy features in addition to keeping your battery topped up:

  • Place your phone on the Charging Dock when you're on a call and its speakerphone automatically turns on.
  • Pick your phone up from the Charging Dock while you're on speakerphone and the conversation is automatically routed back to the phone.
  • For incoming phone calls, simply pick up the phone from the Charging Dock and it answers automatically, without having to tap the screen.
  • When the phone is not in use, Nightstand mode displays the time and incoming notifications.
The Charging Dock also requires the International Power Charger that came with the Palm Pre to operate.

Features

  • Place your Palm Pre on the Touchstone Charging Dock for wireless charging when used with the optional Touchstone Back Cover
  • Inductive coils inside the Charging Dock generate a small, oscillating electromagnetic field and transmit it through the Back Cover
  • Magnets snap your Palm Pre into place on the Charging Dock and charging begins immediately
  • Charges in the same amount of time as wall charger that came with your Palm Pre

« (Verizon Pre Plus) Buyer FYIs »
PRE PLUS COMES WITH INDUCTION COVER

Unlike the Sprint Pre buyers, the Verizon Pre Plus (mine at least) comes with the induction back cover. I believe this can be distinguished by the matte (versus gloss) finish but I am not sure. You can definitely tell by looking at the inside of the cover as mine has a very obvious circular induction area with a pair of brassy contacts where it transfers the power to the phone.

DOES NOT COME WITH WALL PLUG

Just in case it's not obvious in the product listing, this includes ONLY the hockey puck shaped component. It does not come with any cables or wall jacks. It is compatible with your stock cable and plug, but see next section for additional detail.

    QUIRKLY MICRO-USB PORT

As others have noted, the micro-USB port is deeply recessed so you must have a compatible cable that fits into the slot. Obviously the stock cable fits. In my case, the other (non-fitting) cable I purchased will be in my breifcase so I can use the original cable/wall plug with my touchstone. If you are not using stock Palm Parts (cable and wall outlet thing), you should also read other reviews as some report that some USB plug/converters don't work.

    SCREEN STAYS ON WHILE CHARGING

As of this review (March 9, 2010), the LCD display will remain on (at minimum showing the clock, notifications, and the lock button) when placed on a touchstone charger. There is no option to change this. The theory is good as this provides a clock. However, I have sleeping issues and prefer a pitch black room (I even turn clocks away/down) and the light generated by the LCD bothers me. I'm not the only to report this difficulty (forums confirmed it when I looked for a work-around) so keep this in mind if you want to charge bedside and light bothers you. By contrast, if you charge with the cable only, the LCD will go fully black -- also saving you the cost of the touchstone.

    SUMMARY

I still gave it 5 stars because none of these FYIs are really complaints about the product itself, just things for buyers to keep in mind when deciding for/against the touchstone.

Neatest trick ever. Just place your phone on it and it does the rest. Great

I LOVE this charger. First i thought it was a little frivolous, but as I have been using it heavily while I am at work I don't know how I ever worked without it. I set it up on my desk, and if i need to type on computer, and take a call at the same time, It's a breeze-because it automatically answers the call in speakerphone, while continuing to charge the phone. plus it looks cool, and it has made all my iphone friends very jealous! Neat little piece of tech, definitely worth the price on amazon.

If you have the Verizon Pre Plus, ignore those saying this isn't "the kit" because you already have everything you need. The Verizon Pre comes with the Touchstone back plate, whereas the Sprint version doesn't.

I have the Verizon Pre Plus, which comes with the Touchstone compatible cover, but not the actual Touchstone. This works perfectly, right out of the box. It also works with the car adapter. It works great in the car because the bottom has a tacky surface like sticky notes, so it stays on my dashboard or shift console, making it easy to use and keeping it from sliding around and falling on the floor.

I was skeptical about whether this was worth having. Once I tried it, I am hooked. I wish it came with the phone, because it's definitely one of the best features of the Pre, by keeping it a truly wireless phone.

Well worth the Amazon price (cheaper than Verizon), and something every Verizon Pre owner should get. HIghly recommended!

I recently bought a Palm Pre from Verizon for work and got once of these charging stations, it worked great.

I then went to get another one for home and discovered I could not charge my phone with it. It's a paperweight. I went BACK to the store and they informed me they had no idea it was not a complete charger and so they had not ordered any of the USB power cables. So having left my charger at work, I am left unable to charge my phone for the weekend because Palm got greedy.

$50 for something that will not even charge my phone? They want ANOTHER $30 just to give it power?

Show me one other company which charges $80 for a phone charger kit.

It is a wonderful idea, and when you have all the right cables works great, but there is absolutely no excuse for making this an incomplete charging kit other than pure greed, and lack of respect for your customers and their wallets.
